MERG exists to bring together people interested in the application of electronics and/or computers to all aspects of railway modelling. The Group presents a forum where members suggest and discuss new ideas and improvements on the old.
The Group maintains a library of over 240 Technical Bulletins (available only to members) covering numerous applications of electronics to the hobby such as: signalling, train detection, command control (both Zero1 and DCC), sound as well as computer interfacing and control. New and updated bulletins are available for download from our members only pages on this website. (180 of the bulletins are currently available for downloading).
Membership is open to all modellers or would be modellers aged 18 and over, whatever the scale, gauge or prototype modelled, electronics are applicable to all. MERG has a membership of over 2,700, ranging from professional electronic engineers to amateur beginners, from overseas as well as throughout the UK.
A growing list of kits, including Train-on-Track indicators, Gas Lamp Twinklers, a Computer Control system, DCC and the new CBus Layout Control System are available to members and, on occasion, ‘bargain’ components of model railway relevance. Discounts on commercial items are available from various traders.
The Journal is issued quarterly and includes members’ questions and answers, their achievements and details of new products of interest and details of forthcoming meetings. Back issues of the Journal are archived on the MERG Members website. Many of the members also keep in touch through the Group's forum. For those who like to chat by email there is also a general email group on Yahoo reserved for members. There are also a few specialised email discussion groups which members may join if they develop an interest in the relevant topic.
Meetings are held regularly in London, usually with a technical talk given, and there are local area groups throughout the UK who meet regularly.
We try to offer guidance to members with general queries but do not as a group undertake detail design or production for specific applications.
Membership is currently £16.00 annually for members within the UK. To cover additional postage costs this is increased to £18.00 elsewhere in the Royal Mail Europe Zone and £20.00 for the rest of the world. There is also a joining fee of £5.00.
Note: membership runs for a 12 month period from the date of joining.
New members receive a welcome pack consisting of a welcome letter, a DVD containing the handbook, membership list, all back journals, beginners articles and technical bulletins.
You can join and pay by credit / debit card or PayPal using our online application process. You can also use this process to complete your application and then pay by UK cheque payable to MERG. Online payment will give you almost immediate access to our online facilities.
